Earth at Perihelion

January 3

Perihelion is the point in Earth’s orbit when it is closest to the Sun. This occurs once each year, usually in early January. Despite being closer to the Sun at perihelion, this does not cause the seasons; seasons are driven by Earth’s axial tilt. At perihelion, Earth receives slightly more solar energy than at other times of the year, but the effect on global temperatures is small.
