  • Boeing's Starliner Crew Flight Test: Joshua Kutryk takes the helm as capcom

    CSA astronaut Joshua Kutryk will be the capcom for the ascent and orbital insertion of NASA's Boeing Crew Flight Test (CFT) of the CST-100 Starliner spacecraft to the International Space Station (ISS), and for the atmospheric re-entry and landing. NASA astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams will lift off no earlier than May 6 at 10:34 p.m. ET atop a United Launch Alliance (ULA) Atlas V rocket from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida . They will stay aboard the Space Station for about a week before coming back to Earth.

    The Canadian Space Agency (CSA) is committed to enhancing the capacities and expertise of Canada's academia in the use and application of satellite data. To enable this, the CSA recently allocated $5M in grants over 3 years to support post-secondary institutions in the development of Earth observation (EO) applications that will address climate change, a priority for Canada. Awarded through the CSA's smartEarth funding initiative, these grants allow academia to be equipped with resources, to collaborate with national and international partners, and to train new highly qualified personnel (HQP).

    The Government of Canada is committed to helping unlock the full potential of Canada's space sector and responding to the realities of the new and evolving space ecosystem in Canada and abroad. Budget 2024 announced the establishment of a National Space Council, a whole-of-government approach to support space exploration, space utilization, technology development, research and security. The new National Space Council will enable greater coherence and the level of collaboration required to address cross-cutting issues that span commercial, civil, and defence space domains.

  • Deep Space Food Challenge winner: Ecoaction Innovative Solutions Inc.

    Following a three-year competition, the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) announced Vancouver-based Ecoation Innovative Solutions Inc. (Ecoation) as the winner of the Deep Space Food Challenge. As the Canadian grand prize winner, Ecoation will receive $380,000 for their CANGrow Modular Indoor Food Production System, designed to operate in remote environments like outer space and northern regions. CANGrow uses an innovative approach to producing a diverse range of fresh foods, including strawberries, cherry tomatoes, mycelial meat substitute, etc. With the potential to generate over 700 kg of nutrient-dense food annually, the system maximizes its produce and high-quality protein sources with minimal resources.
