The word rainbow comes from the Latin arcus pluvius, meaning “rainy arch.”  Rainbows are an optical phenomenon and result when the reflection of light (usually sunlight but sometimes moonlight) takes place in water droplets in the Earth’s atmosphere. Rainbows caused by sunlight always appear in the sky directly opposite the sun. Rainbows have been considered good omens for thousands of years.
