Sky watchers will be out in force early Saturday morning May 24th looking for meteors appearing from the northern part of the sky. The new shower known as the Camelopardalids have the potential to be the biggest meteor shower event this year with up to 200 meteors per hour.
Th Earth will be passing through the debris field of Comet 209P/Linear. It’s radiant is located in the constellation Camelopardalis, the giraffe, very near Polaris, The North Star.
This shower could prove to be one fantastic night under the stars, weather permitting of course. The meteors should be at their best from midnight to 3:00 a.m. locally here in the DFW area.
What do you need to enjoy the celestial fireworks? Well, just your eyes, a dark night sky and a comfortable chair. A lounging lawn chair works well. Don’t forget bug spray and coffee. Just pay attention to which one you take a sip of in the dark.
Happy hunting!
