Lunar Occultation Of Antares

Occultations occur when the Moon passes in front of another celestial object and temporarily hides or covers it up in the sky. The bright star Antares or Alpha Scorpii which is the brightest star in the constellation of Scorpius. Antares will disappear behind the Moon around 10:00 p.m. CDT for observers in Texas on the evening of August 24, 2023. “Antares” derives from the Ancient Greek and means “rival to Mars.” This is due to the similarity of its reddish hue to the appearance of the planet Mars.
