Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights)

In October 2024 a severe geomagnetic storm triggered the aurora as far south as Texas. Amazing displays of the northern lights were being photographed and posted online. It’s not unheard of to have the aurora visible from Texas but it’s a pretty rare event indeed.

The aurora was visible here in Texas on the evenings of October 9th and 10th 2024. I missed catching the aurora on the 9th which was the better night but on the 10th I stepped outside and did notice a very slight reddish glow in the sky here west of Fort Worth. By the time I had gathered up my camera gear to take a shot the display has subsided a bit.

As it turned out I was able to get a shot of the aurora. Granted, this shot is not anything close to the amazing and colorful aurora shots taken from up north or even those taken from Texas on the previous day, I’m just happy I was able to capture it. Photo info – Nikon D5100, f /3.5, 18mm, ISO 800, 8 second exposure.
